MADAME WEB

Commonly, the first 20 minutes are fine, but after that, it's the worst, and you can often find evaluations that liken it to The Dark Knight, the pinnacle of superhero movies written by the same scriptwriters. While Mobius, maintaining the clichés of superhero movies, was a failure case with low quality, if Madame Web had been a mystery drama experimenting with Sony's Spider-Man multiverse, it could have been a decent concept. However, as a theatrical movie, it only expanded in scale, with a poorly written script scattered with various genres lacking effort. Consequently, it's harder to receive good reviews compared to Mobius, which at least structurally had the backbone of a superhero movie. The Rotten Tomato critic score started at 23% and dropped to 13%, reaching the worst level. Similarly, the audience score started at 65% but eventually dropped to 54%, leading to a failure even with popcorn sales.
The movie's problems are manifold, but the most immediate issue for non-American countries, including Korea, is that it's entirely independent and doesn't connect with other films, including not being tied to the MCU or the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Some argue that its lack of completeness makes it better for preserving the Spider-Man IP value. In reality, the Spider-Women are just ordinary girls except for scenes where they foresee the future of the protagonist and the villain, and Peter Parker's parents are entirely unnecessary, leaving behind characters that only faintly connect with other universes.
Although it's difficult to grasp why the movie was made, considering its nature, if viewed as a mystery drama laying the groundwork for the Spider-Man universe, one can understand the initial concept. If Madame Web is considered a typical 6-part drama, each episode could introduce encounters with girls, shocking murder scenes with unidentified attackers at each climax, and Madame Web's future predictions gradually revealing until the final episode, where the identity of the unknown attacker is discovered and defeated. However, by trying to string together all these elements into a theatrical film, the weaknesses of the low-budget and subdued atmosphere of the planned drama are exaggerated, while failing to capitalize on the strengths or intentions of the material.
Although it doesn't generate revenue in English-speaking countries, it's as much a topic of discussion as a 'mere failure,' with high views and interest in criticism videos about the movie. Roughly, the evaluations resemble those of cult 4-dimensional movies similar to those famous in the late 2010s, like Real or Fantastic 4, with criticisms about the basic filming techniques and script being incomprehensible throughout. Many find scenes, like the super-powered indigenous people in Peru at the beginning, the villain Spider-Man costume in the city, or the closing scene of Madame Web smiling in her attire, too surreal and awkward, making the movie overall feel like a tranquilizer despite its charming concept art.
